Kerensa is a scientific advisor at NIZO food research and full professor in gut-brain axis organ-on-chip technology at the University of Twente. With a background in food and nutrition, a PhD in protein biochemistry and various postdocs in the field of neurobiology, she is active in the field of gut-brain communication by replicating the gut-brain axis by combining stem cell and microfluidic chip technologies. While her team at the University of Twente is developing a gut-brain axis on chip model to study gut-brain signalling pathways, at NIZO, she is exploring nutrition as modulating factor in gut and brain health.
